It's pretty weird that in Japan, Kitano is just as famous for his comedy as he is for his films. His movies often have a really violent content as well as depth and perspective which is a big contrast to the slap stick comedy he makes. In UK, that would be like Noel Edmonds being respected as a serious auteur.
